In videogames, it can be extremely difficult to avoid resorting to cutscenes to tell the story. When games can find a way to communicate their story through gameplay, it creates a connection with the player in a way other mediums cannot. Final Fantasy VII may seem like an odd choice to highlight how creative gameplay can elevate a story, since it was praised upon release for its impressive pre-rendered cutscenes. Curt and Kev posit that very subtle gameplay touches were the real key in cementing the game as the beloved classic that it is. Don't believe them?
